Abstract
A method and an apparatus adaptively encode a motion image based on temporal and/or spatial complexity. In the method, encoding is performed with different temporal and spatial resolutions at frame rates based on the temporal and/or spatial complexity of an input image so that image data is stored with high efficiency. The method includes calculating a spatial complexity of input image data, determining a resolution by comparing the calculated spatial complexity with a predetermined threshold, and converting the resolution of the input image data based on the resolution.

An adaptive image encoding apparatus based on complexity of input image data, comprising:
- a complexity calculation unit that calculates a complexity of the input image data;
- a complexity characteristic unit that determines a complexity characteristic based on a predetermined threshold;
- and
- a complexity characteristic converting unit that converts an outputted complexity characteristic based on the complexity characteristic.
An adaptive image encoding apparatus based on complexity of input image data, comprising:
- a complexity calculation unit that calculates a temporal complexity and a spatial complexity of the input image data in units of GOPs;
- a complexity characteristic unit that determines a complexity characteristic based on a predetermined threshold;
- and
- a complexity characteristic converting unit that converts an outputted complexity characteristic based on the complexity characteristic,
- wherein,
- when the temporal complexity of a GOP is lower than a first predetermined value and the spatial complexity of the GOP is lower than a second predetermined value, the GOP is encoded with a resolution that is less than an original resolution, and
- when the temporal complexity of the GOP is greater than or equal to the first predetermined value and the spatial complexity of the GOP is greater than or equal to the second predetermined value, the GOP is encoded with the original resolution.
