Abstract
The invention features methods and compositions for treating or preventing lesions of the upper alimentary canal, particularly oral aphthous or mucositis lesions. Intestinal trefoil peptides are administered in effective concentrations either alone or in combination with different therapeutic agents.

A method for treating a lesion of the upper alimentary canal of a mammal comprising administering to said patient a therapeutically effective amount of an intestinal trefoil peptide.
A composition suitable for therapeutic delivery to the upper alimentary canal of a mamml, said composition comprising an intestinal trefoil peptide.
