Abstract
A method for rigidifying a fiber-based paper substrate for use in the exhaust system of a combustion device. In the method, a green ceramic fiber-based paper substrate is impregnated with an impregnating material. The impregnated substrate is fired to form a rigidified substrate that is suitable for use in the exhaust system of a combustion device. This rigidification process is performed at least once and, preferably, two or more times.
Claims10
A method of rigidifying a fiber-based paper suitable for use in an exhaust system of a combustion device, said method comprising:
- providing a green paper comprising refractory ceramic fibers and an organic binder material;
- ultrasonically impregnating said green paper with a first impregnating mixture of particles so as to form an impregnated paper, the first mixture comprising:
- an inorganic binder material having a ceramic component comprising at least one of a ceramic precursor material and a ceramic material;
- and
- firing the impregnated paper so as to at least partially burn the organic binder material, cause ceramic components of the impregnating mixture to bond together and to the ceramic fibers of the paper, thereby causing the fibers to be bound together, and form a rigidified paper suitable for use in an exhaust system of a combustion device.
