A method of determining a variant of a control of a system, in particular in a motor vehicle, the control being implementable in different variants, a component being operable in different variants according to the variants of the control, the component receiving at least one signal via an interface,

• wherein, when the component is first started, the variant is alterable and/or preselectable as a function of the at least one signal,
• and any other change in and/or selection of the variant following the initial startup is possible only with authorization.

A device for determining a variant of the control of a system, in particular in a motor vehicle, the control being implementable in different variants, the device determining its variant for a component for control according to the various variants of the control,

• wherein the first component contains means which, when the first component is first started, select and/or alter a variant for control for the first component as a function of the signal, the means only allowing an additional alteration and/or selection of the variant for control of the first component, subsequent to the initial startup, with authorization.

A device for control of a system, in particular in a motor vehicle, the control being implementable in different variants, comprising a first component and at least one additional component, which are interconnected during operation, the at least one additional component outputting at least one signal, and the first component receiving this signal,

• wherein the first component contains means which, when the first component is first started, select and/or alter a variant for control for the first component as a function of the signal, the means only allowing an additional alteration and/or selection of the variant for control of the first component, subsequent to the initial startup, with authorization.

A component, in particular a control unit, for controlling a system, in particular in a motor vehicle, the control being implementable in different variants, different variants of the component being producible according to the variants of the control, the component receiving at least one signal via an interface,

• wherein the component determines and/or detects a variant itself when the component is first started, as a function of the signal, and the component only allowing another alteration and/or selection of the variant subsequent to the initial startup, with authorization.
