Abstract
The whiteness and stability of a polyolefin have been found to be improved upon addition of a first phosphite, an arylalkyl diphosphite, and a second phosphite selected from a second arylalkyl disphosphite or a triarylphosphite. In addition, the addition of a triarylphosphite with an arylalkyl disphoshite has been found to improve the hygroscopic nature and the hydrolytic stability of the arylalkyl disphosphite.
Claims28
A composition formed by combining components comprising:
- a) a polyolefin;
- b) a first phosphite, which is an arylalkyl diphosphite having a formula,
- 19
- wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, and R10 can be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen or straight-chained or branched, cyclic or acyclic, aromatic or aliphatic, and mixed aliphatic, aromatic, and/or cycloaliphatic organic radicals having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per radical;
- c) a second phosphite selected from:
- (i) a second arylalkyl diphosphite of formula (I), wherein R1, R2, R3 R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, and R10 can be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen or straight-chained or branched, cyclic or acyclic, aromatic or aliphatic, and mixed aliphatic, aromatic, and/or cycloaliphatic organic radicals having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per radical, which is different from the first arylalkyl diphosphite and
- (ii) a triarylphosphite having a formula,
- 20
- wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5, are selected from hydrogen or straight-chained or branched, cyclic or acyclic, aromatic or aliphatic, and mixed aliphatic, aromatic, and/or cycloaliphatic organic radicals having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per radical;
- d) a hindered phenol;
- and
- e) water,
- wherein the second phosphite is present in the composition in an amount sufficient to raise the Phillips Polyethylene Color Number (PE) to a value greater than the PE of a composition formed by combining like amounts of the polyolefin, the first phosphate, the hindered phenol, and water.
A process to improve the hygroscopic nature and hydrolytic stability of phosphites comprising blending:
- (i) a first phosphite, which is an arylalkyl diphosphite having a formula,
- 21
- wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, R9, and R10 can be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen or straight-chained or branched, cyclic or acyclic, aromatic or aliphatic, and mixed aliphatic, aromatic, and/or cycloaliphatic organic radicals having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per radical and
- (ii) a triarylphosphite having a formula,
- 22
- wherein R1, R2, R3, R4, and R5, are selected from hydrogen or straight-chained or branched, cyclic or acyclic, aromatic or aliphatic, and mixed aliphatic, aromatic, and/or cycloaliphatic organic radicals having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms per radical.
