Abstract
Methods are disclosed for using red rice fermentation products for the treatment or prevention of osteoporosis and abnormal bone mass conditions. Particular Monascus strains yield fermentation products with the desired biological activities.
Claims9
A method of treating or preventing osteoporosis in a mammal which comprises:
- administering to a mammal an effective amount of a red rice fermentation product.
A method restoring normal bone mass levels in a human in need of such therapy which comprises administering an effective amount of a red rice fermentation product.
A pharmaceutical or nutritional formulation for restoring normal bone mass, said formulation comprising:
- an effective amount of a red rice fermentation product;
- and
- a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.
