Method and apparatus for radio link control of signaling messages and short message data services in a communication system

An apparatus for communications of data in a communication system comprising:

• a control system for segmenting each message of a plurality of messages into a plurality of segments, incorporating a segment identification in each segment identifying each segment as one of a start segment, a middle segment and an end segment of each message and incorporating a sequence number in each segment of said plurality of messages in a stream of messages;
• a transmitter for transmitting said plurality of segments in an order of said sequence number from a source to a destination.

A communication system comprising:

• a control system in a source station for segmenting each message of a plurality of messages into a plurality of segments, incorporating a segment identification in each segment identifying each segment as one of a start segment, a middle segment and an end segment of each message and incorporating a sequence number in each segment of said plurality of messages in a stream of messages;
• a transmitter in said source station for transmitting said plurality of segments in an order of said sequence number from said source station to a destination station.
