Liquid crystal display device

An active matrix liquid crystal display device comprising:

• a first and a second substrate with a liquid crystal layer therebetween;
• a plurality of drain lines and gate lines formed on the first substrate and crossing each other in a matrix form;
• a plurality of pixels formed by adjoining said drain lines and said gate lines;
• at least a counter electrode and at least a pixel electrode formed on the first substrate in each pixel;
• first means for light blocking arranged in a stripe shape in horizontal direction;
• and
• second means for light blocking arranged in a stripe shape in a vertical direction;
• wherein the first means enable light blocking continuously and the second means enable light blocking when no voltage is applied between the counter electrode and the pixel electrode.

An active matrix type liquid crystal display device comprising:

• a first and a second substrate with a liquid crystal layer therebetween;
• a plurality of drain lines and gate lines formed on the first substrate and crossing each other in a matrix form;
• a plurality of pixels formed by adjoining said drain lines and said gate lines;
• at least a counter electrode and at least a pixel electrode formed on the first substrate in each pixel;
• a gate terminal connected to the gate line formed on the first substrate;
• and
• means for light blocking when no voltage is applied between the counter electrode and the pixel electrode, the light blocking means being provided in a layer which is the same as a layer of the gate terminal.
