Abstract
A BIOS includes a core and multiple modules. The modules include both those that are platform specific and those that are not platform specific. Each module has a standard interface that allows the core (or other module) to call the module. A platform vendor constructs a BIOS by selecting modules from one or more vendors, which when executed can select modules that are suitable for the platform the BIOS resides in.
Claims41
A method comprising:
- starting execution of a basic input output system (BIOS), the BIOS having a plurality of modules;
- determining resources required by the plurality of modules;
- scheduling execution of modules of the plurality of modules;
- and
- dispatching the scheduled modules for execution.
A machine readable medium containing instructions that when executed by a machine, cause the machine to perform operations comprising:
- starting execution of a BIOS, the BIOS having a plurality of modules;
- determining resources required by the plurality of modules;
- scheduling execution of modules of the plurality of modules;
- and
- dispatching the scheduled modules for execution.
A system, comprising:
- a plurality of hardware components;
- a first memory device to store a BIOS, the BIOS having a plurality of modules, the BIOS further including;
- means for determining resources required by the plurality of modules,
- means for scheduling execution of modules of the plurality of modules, and
- means for dispatching scheduled modules for execution;
- and
- a processor coupled to the plurality of hardware components and the first memory device.
A system, comprising:
- a plurality of hardware components;
- a first memory device to store a BIOS, the BIOS comprising:
- a plurality of modules, each module of the plurality of modules to provide at least one service;
- a core operatively coupled to the plurality of modules, wherein the core to select for execution a set of module from the plurality of modules;
- a processor coupled to the plurality of hardware components and the first memory device.
