Abstract
A rapid exchange catheter having a control valve spaced proximal the distal tip of the catheter. The control valve directing a guidewire out of the lumen catheter through an opening in the side wall of the catheter while allowing passage of a vaso-occlusive device through the lumen of the catheter while preventing the vaso-occlusive device from exiting through the opening.
Claims10
A catheter comprising:
- a flexible tubular member having a proximal and a distal end with a lumen extending within the tubular member, the tubular member having an opening adjacent the distal end, the opening extending through the wall of the tubular member;
- and
- a control valve adjacent the opening, the control valve moveable between an open and closed position.
A catheter comprising:
- a flexible tubular member having a proximal and distal end with a lumen extending the length thereof, the tubular member having a guidewire port located proximal the distal end of the tubular member;
- and
- a guidewire valve bonded to the tubular member proximal the guidewire port, the guidewire valve directing a guidewire out of the lumen of the tubular member while allowing passage of a device through the lumen of the tubular member and out the distal end of the tubular member.
A vaso-occlusive device delivery assembly comprising:
- a catheter having a distal end and an opening extending through the wall of the catheter adjacent to the distal end, and a control valve adjacent to the opening, the control valve moveable between an open and closed position;
- a guidewire sized to fit through the opening in the wall of the catheter;
- a vaso-occlusive device sized to fit within the lumen of the catheter for delivery to a desired site in the vasculature.
A method for delivering a vaso-occlusive device through a rapid exchange catheter, the rapid exchange catheter comprising a flexible tubular member having a distal end, a lumen within the tubular member, an opening adjacent to the distal end extending through the wall of the tubular member, and a control valve adjacent to the opening, the method comprising the steps of:
- delivering a guidewire to a desired site in the vasculature;
- loading the catheter onto the guidewire with the control valve in the closed position, such that the guidewire is directed out of the lumen of the catheter through the opening, the catheter loaded onto the guidewire until the distal end of the catheter is delivered to the desired site in the vasculature;
- removing the guidewire from the lumen of the catheter through the opening;
- delivering the vaso-occlusive device to the desired site in the vasculature through the lumen of the catheter, the vaso-occlusive device moving the control valve into an open position, such that the lumen of the catheter is open and the opening in the wall of the catheter is closed, preventing the vaso-occlusive device from exiting through the opening.
