Abstract
Novel delta-endotoxin genes cry26Aa1 and cry28Aa1 isolated from Bacillus thuringiensis ssp. finitimus, whose expression results in novel delta-endotoxins, are disclosed herein. The invention also discloses compositions and formulations containing the toxins that are capable of controlling insect pests. The invention is further drawn to methods of making the toxins and to methods of using the genes, for example in microorganisms to control insect pests or in transgenic plants to confer insect resistance.
Claims29
An isolated nucleic acid molecule, comprising:
- (a) a nucleotide sequence that encodes a polypeptide at least 90% identical to SEQ ID NO:2 or SEQ ID NO:4;
- (b) a nucleotide sequence that encodes SEQ ID NO:2 or SEQ ID NO:4;
- (c) nucleotides 897-4388 of SEQ ID NO:1 or nucleotides 1129-4458 of SEQ ID NO:3;
- (d) a consecutive 20 base pair nucleotide portion identical in sequence to a consecutive 20 base pair portion of nucleotides 897-4388 of SEQ ID NO:1 or a consecutive 20 base pair portion of nucleotides 1129-4458 of SEQ ID NO:3;
- or
- (e) a nucleotide sequence whose complement hybridizes under stringent hybridization and wash conditions to nucleotides 897-4388 of SEQ ID NO:1 or nucleotides 1129-4458 of SEQ ID NO:3;
- wherein said nucleic acid molecule encodes a toxin that is active against insects.
