Abstract
A therapeutic device and therapeutic method for delivering electrical energy to a polymer containing a medicament that allows release of the medicament to a body tissue or organ. The device and method utilizes ultrasonic vibrations to cause the device, implanted in the body tissue or organ to be treated, to discharge an electrical current to the polymer containing the medicament. The medicament is controllably released to the target area by changing the charge of the polymer with the electrical current.
Claims36
A method of treating bodily tissue or an organ, comprising:
- holding a device capable of generating an electrical current at a specific voltage and amperage in response to a transmission of ultrasonic vibrations;
- disposing the device in the vicinity of a tissue or organ to be treated;
- and
- subjecting the device to ultrasonic vibrations in an amount and for a period of time sufficient for the device to generate electrical currents at a specific voltage and amperage towards a polymer microstructure containing a medicament for causing controlled release of the medicament from the polymer microstructure.
A method of treating bodily tissue or an organ, comprising:
- providing a device capable of generating electrical current at a specific voltage and amperage in response to pre-selected stimuli generated by the bodily tissue or organ;
- implanting the device in the vicinity of the tissue to be treated;
- combining a desired medicament with a polymer material such that upon stimulation the medicament can be released from the polymer;
- and
- subjecting the polymer to electrical current for causing controlled release of the medicament from the polymer.
An implantable device for treating bodily tissue or an organ, comprising:
- a polymer provided with a medicament;
- an actuator adapted to selectively deliver a predetermined amount of an electrical impulse to the polymer for release of the medicament to the tissue or organ being treated.
A device for treating bodily tissue or organ, comprising:
- means for generating electrical current at a specific voltage and amperage in response to ultrasonic vibrations;
- means for selectively generating and transmitting ultrasonic vibrations to the electrical generating means in response to a pre-selected stimuli generated by the tissue;
- a sensor adapted to receive the pre-selected stimuli generated by the body tissue, the sensor further adapted to communicate with and selectively energize the ultrasonic vibrations means;
- and
- a polymer microstructure containing a medicament such that controlled release of the medicament from the polymer microstructure to the tissue is caused by the electrical current.
A method of treating body tissue, comprising the steps of:
- preparing a device capable of generating electrical current at a therapeutic voltage and amperage in response to ultrasonic vibrations;
- the device further provided with sensor means, the sensor means adapted to receive pre-selected stimuli generated by the body tissue, the sensor means adapted to communicate with and selectively energize a means for selectively generating and transmitting ultrasonic vibrations to the device in response to the pre-selected stimuli generated by the body tissue;
- disposing the device beneath the skin in the vicinity of the tissue to be treated;
- and
- sensing with the sensor means the pre-selected stimuli generated by the body tissue;
- energizing the means for selectively generating ultrasonic vibrations in response to sensing the pre-selected stimuli generated by the body tissue;
- and
- subjecting a polymer microstructure containing a medicament within the device to the electrical current for causing controlled release of the medicament from the polymer microstructure.
A method of treating bodily tissue or an organ, comprising:
- applying current from a source to a polymer embedded with a drug, the drug being electrically charged at a given polarity similar to the polarity of the applied current;
- and
- eluting the electrically charged drug from the polymer and into a target.
An implantable device for treating bodily tissue or an organ, comprising:
- an implant comprising a polymer embedded with a drug, the drug being electrically charged at a given polarity;
- a source in communication with the implant for delivering current at the same polarity as the drug in order to charge the polymer and elute the drug into a target.
