Abstract
The use of a sulfonated polyester ionomer in a polyamide or polyester resin blend results in articles having enhanced dyeability, as demonstrated by an enhanced dye pick-up of at least 25% over resin blends without such sulfonated polyester ionomer.
Claims15
A process to prepare a thermoplastic composition, comprising the steps of:
- melt blending a polyamide or polyester resin with 0.5-75% of an alkylene aryl polyester sulfonate salt copolymer having metal sulfonate units represented by the formula:
- 2
- or the formula:
- (M+nO3S)d—A—(OR″OH)p
- where p=1-3, d=1-3, p+d=2-6, n=1-5, and A is an aryl group containing one or more aromatic rings where the sulfonate substituent is directly attached to an aryl ring, R″ is a divalent alkyl group and the metal sulfonate group is bound to the polyester through ester linkages,
- pelletizing said melt blend;
- wherein said thermoplastic composition is characterized by being cationically dyeable demonstrated by an enhanced dye pick-up of at least 25% over a composition not containing said alkylene aryl polyester sulfonate salt copolymer.
4 more elements
A thermoplastic composition having an increased affinity for basic dyes, said composition comprising:
- a polymer base selected from a polyamide or a polyester resin;
- a sufficient amount of an alkylene aryl polyester sulfonate salt copolymer having metal sulfonate units represented by the formula:
- 3
- or the formula:
- (M+nO3S)d—A—(OR″OH)p
- where p=1-3, d=1-3, p+d=2-6, n=1-5, and A is an aryl group containing one or more aromatic rings where the sulfonate substituent is directly attached to an aryl ring, R″ is a divalent alkyl group and the metal sulfonate group is bound to the polyester through ester linkages;
- wherein a melt blend of said polymer base and said alkylene aryl polyester sulfonate salt copolymer demonstrates an enhanced dye pick-up of at least 25% over a composition not containing said alkylene aryl polyester sulfonate salt copolymer.
