Abstract
Program data for use in electronic program guides is fragmented in advance of delivery to a low resource client. In the described implementation, the program data is fragmented into equal size fragments. The size of each fragment is selected to guarantee that the data fragments will fit in pre-allocated memory segments at the client. When the program data is delivered to the client, the client stores the data packets in the memory segments without making system calls to the memory.
Claims22
A method comprising:
- constructing a data file that contains program data for an electronic program guide executing at a remote client;
- and
- fragmenting the data file into equal-size fragments prior to delivery of the data file to the remote client.
A method for delivering program data for an electronic program guide executing at a remote client, the client having a memory segmented into multiple segments to store the program data, the method comprising:
- receiving, from the client, information pertaining to a segment size of the segments in the client memory;
- forming a data structure containing the program data;
- fragmenting the data structure into equal-size fragments, each fragment being sized to not exceed the segment size of the segments in the client memory so that the fragments of the data structure will fit within the segments of the client memory;
- and
- transmitting the fragments of the data structure to the client.
A computer-readable medium comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed, direct a computing system to:
- form a data structure containing program data for an electronic program guide;
- and
- fragment the data file into equal-size fragments prior to delivery of the data file to a client.
A computer system, comprising:
- a memory;
- a processor coupled to the memory;
- and
- a data structure fragmenter program stored in memory and executed on the processor to fragment electronic program guide (EPG) data into equal-size data fragments for storage in segments of memory at a remote client.
A processing system, comprising:
- formation means for forming a data structure with program data for an electronic program guide, the electronic program guide residing at a remote client;
- fragmentation means for fragmenting the data structure into equal-size fragments, each fragment being sized to not exceed a segment size of individual memory segments pre-allocated in memory at the client;
- and
- transmission means for transmitting the data structure to the client.
A television entertainment system, comprising:
- multiple clients to receive television signals and corresponding program data for an electronic program guide (EPG), individual clients having a memory dedicated to storing the program data, the client memory being segmented into segments;
- and
- an EPG server to fragment the program data into equal-size data fragments for storage in the segments of the client memory
