Abstract
The invention provides compositions and methods for the use of adipose tissue-derived stromal cells for the treatment and repair of any ocular-associated tissue defect, including but not limited to those secondary to trauma, metabolic disease, inborn errors, or surgery. The adipose tissue-derived stromal cells are cultured in the undifferentiated, differentiated or adipocyte state either alone or in the presence of a biocompatible material. The resulting materials are employed surgically to correct a variety of correct intra-ocular defects.
Claims28
An isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cell induced to express at least one characteristic of an ocular cell.
The ocular cell of any of claims 1-8, wherein the cell is a corneal epithelial cell.
A composition comprising an isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cell induced to express of at least one characteristic of an ocular cell and a biocompatible material.
A method for differentiating isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cells to display at least one ocular-associated cell marker comprising the step of contacting an isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cell with an intra-ocular tissue site in a host.
A method for differentiating isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cells to display at least one ocular cell marker comprising contacting an isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cell with an ocular inducing substance.
A method of treating an ocular disease, degenerative condition or post-surgical condition in a host comprising:
- i) inducing an isolated adipose tissue-derived stromal cell to express at least one ocular cell marker;
- and
- ii) transplanting the induced cell into the host.
A method of treating an ocular disease, degenerative condition or post surgical condition in a host comprising
- i) isolating an adipose tissue-derived stromal cell;
- and
- ii) transplanting the cell into an intra-ocular site in the host.
