Abstract
Methods of inhibiting leukocyte O2− production and attracting leuckocytes using specific peptides are disclosed. These peptides include the proline-arginine (PR)-rich antimicrobial peptide known as PR-39 and truncated analogs thereof. These peptides can be used as medicaments that fight infection by attracting leukocytes to a wound site, yet restrict tissue damage at the wound site caused by excessive oxygen radicals produced by these leukocytes.
Claims11
A method of attracting a leukocyte to a location comprising the step of administering to the location a peptide capable of attracting a leukocyte.
A method of inhibiting leukocyte O2− production comprising the step of contacting a leukocyte with a peptide capable of inhibiting leukocyte O2−, said peptide having a sequence selected from the group consisting of X1pX2PpX3P and X3′PpX2′PpX1′, wherein P represents proline and X represents any amino acid.
