Abstract

A photo-curable composition comprising (a) an elastomeric component containing one or more unsaturated, high molecular weight, endgroup-modified polymers; (b) a photopolymerization initiating system; optionally (c) one or more cross-linking agents; and optionally (d) other additives. Photo-curable compositions of the present invention exhibit faster cross-linking (i.e., curing) rates (i.e., lower minimum exposure times) than similar compositions containing no endgroup-modified polymers. Cured compositions of the present invention exhibit lower solvent swell, and similar or increased softness (i.e., lower hardness as measured by Shore A hardness) when compared to cured compositions containing no unsaturated, high molecular weight, endgroup-modified polymers.

Dependent claims

A photo-cured composition produced by exposing a composition, comprising:

(a) an elastomeric component containing at least 50 weight percent of one or more unsaturated polymers of the formula I-A-B-A′-R, based on the total weight of polymer(s) in the composition;
wherein I is the residue from an organometallic initiator, A and A′ are polymer blocks of one or more monoalkenyl arenes, B is a polymer block of one or more conjugated dienes, and R is a reactive endgroup;
having a number average molecular weight of greater than about 30,000 and the reactive endgroup being one capable of free-radical addition polymerization, co-polymerization, oligomerization, or dimerization initiated by a photo-initiator in the presence of actinic radiation;
and
(b) a photo-polymerization initiating system;
to at least about 4.11 Joules/cm2 of actinic radiation.
