Abstract
An optical recording medium and a method for assigning a spare area in a rewritable optical recording medium are provided, in which a supplementary spare area is assigned as necessary if an enlargement of the spare area is required. The present method includes (1) determining an allowable size of the supplementary spare area, and (2) assigning the supplementary spare area in variable increments within the allowable size determined in (1).

An optical recording medium which has two types of spare areas, the optical recording medium comprising:
- a first spare area which is assigned a fixed size;
- and
- a second spare area which is assigned a variable size within a pre-determined maximum allowable size,
- wherein the assigned variable size of the second spare area is a multiple of a minimum unit.
A method for assigning a spare area in an optical recording medium having two types of spare areas, the method comprising:
- assigning a first spare area to a fixed size;
- and
- assigning a second spare area to a variable size within a pre-determined maximum allowable size,
- wherein the assigned variable size of the second spare area is a multiple of a minimum unit.
