Methods and compositions for promoting tolerogenic immune responses or treating immune responses to food antigens comprise Lactobacillus GG. Oral administration of Lactobacillus GG to patients such as human infants may promote a tolerogenic immune response to antigens in cow's milk.

A method of promoting tolerogenic immune responses to food antigens in a patient, comprising orally administering a bacterial preparation comprising Lactobacillus GG (ATCC 53103) to the patient.
