A method for dequantization and inverse transformation, said method comprising:
- supplying a plurality of quantized coefficient levels (c);
- supplying a quantization parameter (QP);
- determining a mantissa portion RQP;
- determining an exponential portion (bEQP);
- computing reconstructed transform coefficients (w) from said plurality of quantized coefficient levels (c) and said mantissa portion RQP;
- performing an inverse transformation on said reconstructed transform coefficients (w) thereby yielding scaled transformed samples;
- computing reconstructed samples, (x) using said exponential portion wherein said computing reconstructed samples compensates for the lack of the exponential portion in the inverse transformation process.

A method for dequantization and inverse transformation, said method comprising:
- supplying a plurality of quantized coefficient levels (c);
- supplying a quantization parameter (QP);
- determining a mantissa portion RQP;
- determining an exponential portion EQP;
- computing reconstructed transform coefficients ({tilde over (w)}α) wherein
- {tilde over (w)}α=cα·RQP
- performing an inverse transformation on said reconstructed transform coefficients (w) thereby yielding transformed samples ({tilde over (x)}′);
- computing reconstructed samples, (x″α) wherein
- x″α=└{tilde over (x)}′α+(f<<EQP)┘>>(M−EQP).

An apparatus for dequantization and inverse transformation, said apparatus comprising:
- a first receiver for receiving a plurality of quantized coefficient levels (c);
- a second receiver for receiving a quantization parameter (QP);
- a first processor for determining a mantissa portion RQP;
- a second processor for determining an exponential portion (bEQP);
- a third processor for computing reconstructed transform coefficients (w) from the quantized coefficient levels (c) and said mantissa portion RQP;
- a fourth processor for performing an inverse transformation on said reconstructed transform coefficients (w) thereby yielding transformed samples;
- a fifth processor for computing reconstructed samples, (x) using said exponential portion wherein said computing reconstructed samples compensates for the lack of the exponential portion in the inverse transformation process.
