Abstract
An apparatus and method for removing a lodged mass from an airway of a human or animal in which the source of suction is a sealed vacuum container which is punctured when the device is positioned within the mouth of the victim. As contrasted with prior art devices of this type, the retracting force created due to the pressure differential is developed instantaneously to a greater degree than heretofore obtainable, and this force is maintained until the foreign object is completely dislodged.
Claims5
The method of removing a mass lodged in an animal air passage comprising the steps of:
- (a) sealing the nasal and oral cavities and depressing the tongue of the victim, and subsequently
- (b) exposing the sealed nasal and oral cavities of the victim to communication with an evacuated canister to thereby create a lower pressure in the oral cavity above the obstruction.
The method of removing a mass lodged in the pharynx and/or larynx of a victim comprising the steps of:
- (a) applying to the victim a device comprising means for sealing the nasal and oral cavities and depressing the tongue, a sealed evacuated canister and a valved non-collapsible conduit communicating the oral cavity at one end and the evacuated canister at the other end;
- (b) puncturing the sealed evacuated canister, and
- (c) subsequently instantaneously communicating the oral cavity with the evacuated container by opening the valved conduit.
