Abstract
An anode is provided for an electrochemical cell having an ionically conductive additive, such as Laponite® or any alternative clay suitable to improve the transport of hydroxyl ions into anode during discharge.
Claims20
An electrochemical cell comprising:
- a container;
- a cathode disposed within the container and presenting an inner surface that defines a centrally disposed void filled with a mixture of anode and electrolyte;
- and
- a separator disposed between the inner surface of the cathode and the anode mixture, wherein
- the mixture includes a mercury-free anode including zinc and a ionically conductive clay additive dispersed throughout the mixture.
2 more elements
A method for producing an anode of an electrochemical cell, the steps comprising:
- (A) providing a zinc alloy powder;
- (B) blending the zinc alloy powder with a gelling agent to form a gelled mixture;
- (C) mixing the gelled mixture with an electrically conducting polymer to produce a coated zinc anode;
- (D) mixing the coated zinc anode with an alkaline electrolyte;
- and
- (E) mixing an ionically conductive additive with at least one of the zinc alloy powder, the gelled mixture, and the alkaline electrolyte prior to step (D).

An electrochemical cell comprising:
- a container;
- a cathode disposed within the container and presenting an inner surface that defines a centrally disposed void filled with a mixture of anode and electrolyte;
- and
- a separator disposed between the inner surface of the cathode and the anode mixture, wherein
- the mixture includes a mercury-free anode including zinc and a dispersion of ionically conductive particles.
