Abstract
A three-dimensional (spherical) joint for connecting mechanical links has its concave and convex concentrical spherical surfaces connected by means of preloaded in compression high shape factor (thin-layered) elastomeric elements, whose shear deformation provides for 3D mobility.
Claims12
A joint for connecting at least two mechanical links so as to allow them relative rotational motion about three intersecting mutually perpendicular axes so that their combined freedom defines a spherical surface centered about the intersection point of said axes, comprising:
- at least one high shape factor elastomeric element having its outer and inner surfaces, conforming with said spherical surface, with opposed points on its outer and inner surfaces connected respectively with different mechanical links, the elastomeric element being disposed between the links so that its axis of highest stiffness in compression is directed along a radius of said spherical surface and its directions of lowest stiffness in shear are circumferential in relation to said spherical surface.
