Cable stay damper band and method of use for reduction of fluid induced cable vibrations

A method for controlling fluid current induced cable vibrations including:

• providing a cable damper band having a hollow interior;
• positioning a shiftable mass and a shiftable mass energizing device within said hollow interior;
• securing said cable damper band about a cable subject to fluid current induced vibrations;
• sensing vibrations in the cable;
• actuating said shiftable mass energizing device in response to said sensed vibrations in the cable;
• and
• using said energizing device to shift said shiftable mass in said hollow interior of said damper band to counteract said vibrations in the cable.

A cable damper band comprising:

• a cable damper band body having first and second ends, said cable damper band body being flexible and being sized to at least partially encircle a cable and having a band body cross-sectional shape adapted to dampen vibrations in a cable induced by passage of a fluid over a surface of a cable on which said cable band body is placed;
• a cable damper band body base, said base being formed on said cable damper band body and being adapted to directly engage a surface of a cable to which said cable damper band body is secured;
• a tensioning strap in said cable damper band body;
• and
• means for tightening said tensioning strap to tighten said cable damper band body about a cable, said first and second ends of said cable damper band body being moved toward each other during said tightening of said tensioning strap.

A method damping fluid induced vibrations in a cable including:

• determining a cable diameter;
• providing a plurality of cable damper bands with each of said plurality of cable damper band having a damper band body having first and second ends, each said cable damper band body being flexible;
• sizing each of said cable damper band bodies to at least partially encircle a cable;
• providing each of said cable damper band bodies with a cross-sectional shape adapted to damper vibrations in a cable induced by passage of a fluid over surface of a cable on which said cable damper band is placed;
• providing each of said cable damper band or bodies with a cable damper band body base, each said base being formed on said cable damper band body and being adapted to directly engage a surface of a cable to which each said cable damper band body is secured;
• providing a tensioning strap in each said cable damper band body;
• providing means for tightening said tensioning strap to tighten each said cable damper band body about a cable, said first and second ends of each said cable damper band body being moved toward each other during said tightening of said tensioning strap;
• spacing said plurality of said cable damper bands along said cable at a spacing distance;
• and
• securing each of said cable damper bands to said cable using said tensioning strap in each of said plurality of cable stay aerodynamic damper band bodies.

A cable damper band comprising:

• a damper band body, said damper band body being positionable on a surface of a cable subjected to fluid current induced vibrations, said damper band body being sized to at least partially encircle a cable and having a band body shape, said damper band body further including active means for reducing said fluid current induced vibrations in a cable;
• a cable damper band base found on said cable damper band body and adapted to engage a surface of a cable to which said cable damper band body is secured;
• and
• means for securing said cable damper band on a cable.
