Abstract
A system is disclosed which makes it possible for a patient to be delivered gradually reduced amounts of nicotine over time thereby allowing the patient to be gradually weaned off of dependence on nicotine and quit smoking. The system is comprised of a means for aerosolizing a formulation and containers of formulation. The formulation is comprised of nicotine in a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Preferably, a plurality of containers are produced wherein the concentration of nicotine in the different containers or different groups of containers is reduced. The patient uses containers with the highest concentration initially and gradually moves towards using containers with lower and lower concentrations of nicotine until the patient's dependence on nicotine is eliminated.
Claims10
A method of treatment, comprising the steps of:
- (a) aerosolizing a pharmaceutical formulation comprised of nicotine to create aerosolized particles having a size in the range from about 0.5 to 12μ;
- and
- (b) allowing the patient to inhale the aerosolized particles of (a) thereby causing nicotine to directly enter the patient's arterial system from the patient's lungs.
A method of treating a patient having a patient-specific peak arterial nicotine plasma concentration-rate, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) aerosolizing a pharmaceutical formulation comprised of nicotine to create aerosolized particles having an initial size abosrbable by the lungs upon inhalation and to substantially achieve the peak nicotine plasma concentration-rate;
- (b) allowing the patient to inhale the aerosolized particles of (a) thereby causing nicotine to directly enter the patient's arterial system from the patient's lungs;
- and.
- (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) a plurality of times.
A method of treating a patient having a patient-specific arterial nicotine plasma concentration-rate profile achieved during cigarette smoking, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a first pharmaceutical formulation comprised of nicotine present in a first concentration;
- (b) over a first period of time, repeatedly delivering the first pharmaceutical formulation directly to the patient's arterial circulatory system via the lungs, wherein the patient's arterial nicotine plasma concentration-rate profile substantially corresponds to that achieved during cigarette smoking;
- (c) providing a second pharmaceutical formulation comprised of nicotine present in a second concentration which is less than the first concentration;
- and
- (d) over a second period of time, repeatedly delivering the second pharmaceutical formulation directly to the patient's arterial circulatory system via the patient's lungs.
A method of treating a patient, comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a pharmaceutical formulation comprised of nicotine;
- (b) administering the pharmaceutical formulation to the patient in a manner to create an initial sharp rise in the patient's arterial nicotine plasma concentration followed by a slow release of nicotine;
- and
- (c) repeating steps (a) and (b) a plurality of times.
