Abstract
A core glass for making a preform for an optical fiber particularly useful for the transmission of ultraviolet radiation and methods for making the core glass are disclosed. The core glass is obtained by the flame hydrolysis of a silicon compound, deposition of finely granular SiO2 on a substrate with direct vitrification and formation of a synthetic quartz glass. The quartz glass has a hydrogen content of less than 1×1018 molecules/cm3.

Core glass for making a preform for an optical fiber, especially an optical fiber for the transmission of ultraviolet radiation, obtained by the flame hydrolysis of a silicon compound, deposition of finely granular SiO2 on a substrate with direct vitrification and formation of a synthetic quartz glass, characterized in that the quartz glass has a hydrogen content of less than 1×1018 molecules/cm3.
Preform for an optical fiber, especially for an optical fiber for the transmission of ultraviolet radiation, with a core glass of synthetic quartz glass, obtained by flame hydrolysis of a silicon compound, deposition of finely granular SiO2 on a substrate with direct vitrification and formation of the synthetic quartz glass, which is enveloped in a glass jacket, characterized in that the core glass has a hydrogen content of less than 1×1018 molecules/cm3.
Method for the manufacture of a core glass of a preform for an optical fiber, especially for an optical fiber for the transmission of UV radiation, comprising the manufacture of synthetic quartz glass by flame hydrolysis of a silicon compound, deposition of finely granular SiO2 on a substrate with direct vitrification and formation of a synthetic quartz glass, characterized in that the hydrogen content of the quartz glass is adjusted to a value below 1×1018 molecules/cm3.
Method for the manufacture of an optical fiber, especially an optical fiber for the transmission of UV radiation, by drawing from a preform which comprises a core glass of synthetic quartz glass which is formed by flame hydrolysis of a silicon compound, deposition of finely granular SiO2 on a substrate with direct vibrification and formation of the synthetic quartz glass, characterized in that the core glass is adjusted prior to drawing to a hydrogen-content of less than 1×1018 molecules/cm3.
