Abstract
A prosthesis or implant has a surface carrying a coating comprising at least one phospholipid at a concentration to improve osteointegration. A method of making such a prosthesis or implant and a kit comprising a prosthesis or implant is also described.
Claims25
A prosthesis or implant having a surface carrying a coating comprising at least one phospholipid at a concentration to improve osteointegration.
The prosthesis or implant according to any previous claim in which the phospholipid primarily coats only parts of the surface of the prosthesis or implant that is likely to be subject to mechanical stress in vivo.
The prosthesis or implant according to any previous claim in which the phospholipid is substantially free of effective amounts of phosphatidylcholine.
The prosthesis or implant according to any preceding claim further including a coating of calcium phosphate.
The prosthesis or implant according to any preceding claim in which the phospholipid coating comprises biologically active materials such as antibiotics or antithrombotic pharmaceuticals.
A method of making a prosthesis or implant having improved osteointegration, which method comprises providing a prosthesis or implant and coating a surface thereof with a phospholipid.
In a method of surgery that comprises introducing a prosthesis or implant into a patient, the improvement which consists in coating a surface of the prosthesis or implant with a phospholipid at a concentration to improve osteointegration.
Use of a phospholipid to coat a surface of a prosthesis or implant to improve osteointegration of the prosthesis or implant.
Use of a phospholipid coated prosthesis or implant to improve osteointegration of the prosthesis or implant.
A prosthetic or implant kit comprising:
- a prosthesis or implant;
- and
- a phospholipid composition.
A prosthetic or implant kit comprising:
- a prosthetic or implant having a surface carrying a coating comprising at least one phospholipid at a concentration to improve osteointegration;
- and
- a simulated body fluid or means for making a simulated body fluid.
