Abstract
A compound containing an alkylene selenocyanate or an alkylene isoselenocyanate moiety effective to prevent the occurrence or progression of cancer or a precancerous condition. The compound can be provided and administered in the form of a pharmaceutical composition, a cosmetic, a food additive, supplement, or the like. Methods for synthesis and use of the chemopreventive compound of the invention are also provided.

A compound having formula I

- wherein:
- R1 is H, (alkylene)-SeCN, or a blocking group;
- R2 is H, (alkylene)-SeCN, or a blocking group;
- R3 is H, (alkylene)-SeCN, or a blocking group;
- R4 is (alkylene)-SeCN;
- and
- Z is S, Se or O;
- with the proviso that when R1=R4=CH2—SeCN, at least one of R2 and R3 is not H.

A method for preventing the occurrence or progression of a cancer or a precancerous condition comprising administering to a mammal a chemopreventive composition comprising a compound selected from the group consisting of:
- (a) a compound having formula I

- R2 is H, (alkylene)-SeCN, or a blocking group;
- R3 is H, (alkylene)-SeCN, or a blocking group;
- R4 is (alkylene)-SeCN;
- and
- Z is S, Se or O;
- (b) a compound having formula II

- R1 is H, (alkylene)-NCSe, or a blocking group;
- R2 is H, (alkylene)-NCSe, or a blocking group;
- R3 is H, (alkylene)-NCSe, or a blocking group;
- R4 is (alkylene)-NCSe;
- and
- Z is S, Se or O;
- (c) c) a compound having formula III

- R1 is H, (alkylene)-NCSe, or a blocking group;
- and
- R2 is (alkylene)-NCSe;
- (d) a cysteine-containing conjugate of a compound having formula I;
- (e) a cysteine-containing conjugate of a compound having formula II;
- and
- (f) a cysteine-containing conjugate of a compound having formula III in an amount effective to prevent the occurrence of a cancer or a precancerous condition or to slow, halt or reverse the progression of a cancer or a precancerous condition.
