Abstract

A white fungus of genus Sphingomonas, when washed with acetone and then extracted with alcohol or alcohol-water mixture yields a shingoglycolipid represented by the following formula: 1 where, R1 represents a sugar portion of a single uronic acid or one to four hexoses of uronic acid, glucosamine, galactose and/or mannose; R2 represents an alkyl group which may have a cycloalkyl group, an alkenyl group or an alkynyl group; and R3 represents on alkyl group.
