The display device of the present invention relates to a display device characterized in that it includes a first electrode formed on a substrate, an insulating layer formed on the first electrode in such a way that the first electrode is partially exposed, and a second electrode providing facing the first electrode, and the insulating layer is a positive-type photosensitive polyimide in which the indispensable components are polymer having structural units represented by the following general formula (1) as its chief component and a photoacid generator. 1 (R1 and R2 represent divalent to octavalent organic groups having at least two carbon atoms, and R3 and R4 represent hydrogen, an alkali metal ion, an ammonium ion or an organic group with 1 to 20 carbons. R3 and R4 may be the same or different. m is an integer in the range 3 to 100,000, and n and o are integers in the range 0 to 2. p and q are integers in the range 0 to 4, and n+q>0.) In accordance with the present invention, patterning of the insulating layer comprising polyimide is possible by a simple process. Furthermore, it is possible to obtain readily the tapered shape which is the preferred cross-section of the insulating layer.
