Abstract
A mechanism for notifying a mobile station of receipt of a packet-switched paging message in a GSM communication system. A base station controller (108) sends the packet-switched paging message to the mobile station (116) along a main dedicated control channel in response to the mobile station being capable of operating in a dual transfer mode and being currently engaged in circuit-switch voice interchange activity, resulting in a simultaneous voice and data transmission in dual transfer mode.
Claims21
A method for notifying a dual transfer mode mobile station, operating in circuit-switched voice interchange activity, of a packet-switched paging message, comprising the steps of:
- determining capabilities of the mobile station;
- and
- providing a signaling path utilizing an existing main dedicated control channel by which the mobile station is notified of the paging message.
A method of notifying a mobile station of a packet-switched page, comprising the steps of:
- determining whether the mobile station is capable of operating in a dual transfer mode;
- determining whether the mobile station is currently engaged in circuit-switched voice interchange activity;
- and
- sending a packet-switched paging message on a main dedicated control channel in response to the mobile station being capable of operating in a dual transfer mode and being currently engaged in circuit-switched voice interchange activity.
A mobile station sending and receiving signals from a base station controller of a communication system, the mobile station comprising:
- a transceiver receiving a packet-switched paging message from the base station controller along a main dedicated control channel in response to a packet-switched page addressed to the mobile station;
- and
- a processor processing the received packet-switched paging message and creating simultaneous voice and data transmission in a dual transfer mode.
