An enhanced crosspoint bus control protocol is provided for expanding a conventional crosspoint bus by altering one or more bit definitions in a standard encoded bus control message. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, by changing the definition of one or more predetermined bits in a message sequence such that these bits are control bits, the novel crosspoint bus control protocol preferably signifies whether the message corresponds to a standard crosspoint bus architecture or to an extended crosspoint bus architecture. The unique enhanced crosspoint bus protocol of the present invention supports an extended message length while being backward compatible with existing crosspoint bus protocols, thereby allowing the existing and enhanced crosspoint bus protocols to advantageously co-exist on the same physical bus.
A method of extending a standard crosspoint bus protocol for controlling an enhanced crosspoint bus, the method comprising the step of:
Apparatus for extending a standard crosspoint bus protocol for controlling an enhanced crosspoint bus, the apparatus comprising:
A routing switcher matrix circuit for selectively controlling a corresponding crosspoint switch in a routing switcher system, the routing switcher matrix circuit comprising:
An article of manufacture for extending a standard crosspoint bus protocol for controlling an enhanced crosspoint bus, the article comprising a machine readable medium containing one or more programs which when executed implement the steps of:
