Abstract
A data structure, termed a pyramid, representing levels of data is disclosed. A method to produce the data structure is also disclosed. The pyramid data structure includes a series of levels, termed floors. In turn, the each floor is comprised of numerous cells. The data structure may be cached or can be stored in a file or database for run-time access by distributed applications.

A computer-readable medium encoded with a data structure representing levels of data, the data structure comprising:
- a set of cells;
- subsets of the set of cells each comprising a floor;
- and the floors comprising a pyramid.
A method for constructing a pyramid data structure representing a digital image comprising the steps of:
- selecting the digital image;
- defining a pyramid data structure to represent the digital image;
- selecting a pixel within a cell within a floor of the digital image;
- invoking steps for calculating a pixel value for the pixel;
- and repeating the steps of selecting a pixel and invoking steps for calculating a pixel value until all pixels within all cells within all floors are calculated.
