Abstract
A display panel, laminated substrate, and liquid crystal cell which includes a pair of facing substrates bonded together with a sealing material. One or both of the substrates includes at least one corner portion on which a plurality of protruding pads are formed, the pads assisting in dispersion of the sealing material during bonding of the substrates to prevent sealing material from moving inwardly and possibly adversely affecting the display region of the resulting structure. A method of making such a laminated substrate is also provided.
Claims23
A display panel comprising:
- a first substrate having an image display area and at least one corner portion;
- a second substrate disposed opposite to said first substrate with a space provided therebetween, said second substrate also having at least one corner portion located adjacent said corner portion of said first substrate;
- sealing material disposed along the perimeter of said image display area for joining said first substrate and said second substrate, said sealing material and said space defining a region between said first and second substrates;
- an image display material located within said region defined by said space and said sealing material;
- and
- a plurality of pads positioned on said corner portion of said first substrate and/or said second substrate, or forming a part thereof, said pads facing said image display material and oriented in a substantially radial pattern within said corner portion.
A laminated substrate comprising:
- a substantially rectangular first substrate having a perimeter;
- a substantially rectangular second substrate disposed opposite to said first substrate with a space provided therebetween;
- sealing material of a frame shape disposed along said perimeter of said first substrate for bonding said first and second substrates, said sealing material having linear edge portions and corner portions for connecting said linear edge portions;
- a plurality of first pads positioned on said substantially rectangular first substrate relative to said linear edge portions of said sealing material;
- and
- a plurality of second pads positioned on said first substrate relative to said corner portions of said sealing material and oriented in a substantially radial pattern within said corner portion.
A liquid crystal cell comprising:
- a substantially rectangular first substrate having a color filter layer and four corner portions;
- a substantially rectangular second substrate being disposed opposite to said first substrate and having driver elements for liquid crystal materials;
- a sealing material of a frame shape for joining said first substrate and said second substrate;
- and
- a plurality of pads positioned on each of said corner portions of said first substrate or forming a part of said first substrate, said pads oriented in a substantially radial pattern in said corner portions.
A method of manufacturing a laminated substrate having rectangular first and second substrates, said method comprising:
- providing a first substrate having corner portions and a perimeter;
- providing a second substrate and positioning said second substrate adjacent said first substrate to define a space therebetween;
- forming a plurality of pads at each of said corner portions of said first substrate on a surface facing said second substrate, such that said pads in each of said corner portions are oriented in a substantially radial pattern;
- applying a sealing material onto said first substrate having said plurality of pads formed thereon, said sealing material being applied along said perimeter of said first substrate on said facing surface and on said plurality of pads;
- laminating said first substrate and said second substrate together;
- and
- substantially curing said sealing material to join said first substrate and said second substrate.
