Abstract
A method and apparatus for controlling or removing mercury, mercury compounds and high molecular weight organics, if present, from a resource recovery exhaust stream by separately adding a carbonaceous char to the flue gas while it is still within the unit. The char can be produced in situ by adding a carbonaceous material and allowing it to thermally decompose.
Claims20
A method for controlling contaminant emission from a resource recovery unit, which comprises:
- separately supplying a carbonaceous char to a flue gas within said resource recovery unit at a non-combustion charring zone.
A method for removing toxic contaminants from a gas produced in a resource recovery unit, which comprises:
- combusting in a resource recovery unit a contaminant-containing waste material to form ash and contaminant-containing flue gas;
- separately supplying a carbonaceous char at a non-combusting charring zone of said resource recovery unit;
- and
- adsorbing said contaminant from said flue gas onto said char.
A method for removing toxic contaminants from a gas produced in a resource recovery unit, which comprises:
- combusting in a resource recovery unit a contaminant-containing waste material to form ash and contaminant-containing flue gas;
- conveying said flue gas to a boiler in said resource recovery unit and boiler cooling said flue gas;
- separately supplying a carbonaceous material to said flue gas at or before said boiler cooling at a non-combusting charring zone of said resource recovery unit to form a char entrained in said flue gas;
- and
- adsorbing said contaminant from said flue gas onto said char.
An apparatus for incinerating waste, comprising:
- a combustion zone for burning waste supplied thereto having a waste input port, a flue gas exhaust port, and an ash outlet;
- a boiler for cooling flue gas in fluid communication with said combustion zone via said flue gas exhaust port;
- and
- a carbonaceous material feeder for introducing carbonaceous material separately from said waste input and into a non-combusting charring zone.
