The present invention provides carbosilanes represented by the following general formula (1), polycarbosilanes synthesized therefrom by the polymerization reaction using an organic typical metal compound as an initiator, and the processes for producing the same. 1 wherein M represents an Sn, Ge or Pb atom; A represents an aliphatic group having 2-10 carbon atoms, a carbocyclic group or a heterocyclic group containing one or more atoms selected from silicon, oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur atoms, both groups having 6-30 carbon atoms; R1, R2, R3, R6, R7and R8 each independently represent an alkyl group having 1-20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl or alkynyl group having 2-20 carbon atoms, or an aryl group having 6-20 carbon atoms; R4, R5, R9 and R10 each independently represent an alkyl group having 1-20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl or alkynyl group having 2-20 carbon atoms, an alkenylalkyl or alkynylalkyl group having 3-20 carbon atoms, or an aryl group having 6-20 carbon atoms. These carbosilanes and polycarbosilanes per se are useful as industrial materials, but they are also usable as materials for polymers as a macromonomer.
