Abstract
A device for thermal treatment of gases and pollutants employs alternate cavity (1) and susceptor (9) geometries for providing more homogeneous interactions of applied electromagnetic energy (6) in the volume of the receptor (9) regardless of the flow rate and diameter of the exhaust duct (3) width. The heat transfer method improve the overall heat efficiency of the device. The susceptor (9) structure has reflectivity as principle mode of interaction with applied electromagnetic energy (6) which allows for energy to mepetrate the susceptor (9) which is formed of composite susceptive materials. The use of field concentrators (5) to concentrate the energy density of the applied electromagnetic energy (6) provides a simple method of controlling the temperature versus energy in the susceptor (9).
Claims44
Device which uses applied electromagnetic energy for treatment of chemical species in gas and particulate form comprising, in combination:
- a cavity which has a geometry of the cross-sectional area that is normal to the flow of the gas and particulate shaped as an irregular-shaped polygon of four, (4) or more sides, where two sides that are parallel to each other are elongated, producing the greatest dimension of the said cross-sectional area known as the length;
- having opening located on each parallel side of the greatest dimension of the said cross-sectional area as a means for the applied electromagnetic energy to enter the cavity;
- 1 having an inlet where the flow of gas enters the cavity with said inlet having a means to prevent the applied electromagnetic energy from escaping the cavity;
- having an outlet where the flow of treated gases leaves the cavity with said outlet having a means to prevent electromagnetic energy from escaping the cavity;
- having a gas-permeable susceptor which provides a means for a desired treatment of the chemical species in gas and particulate form by volumetric interaction with the applied electromagnetic energy by having the depth of penetration of the susceptor by the applied electromagnetic energy being no less then one-third the width of the said gas-permeable susceptor, where a least 50% of the applied energy in the cavity volumetrically interacts with said susceptor by the volume that is given by the product of the width of interaction by the said susceptor's breadth by the said susceptor's length
- having the cavity extended in the direction of the breadth of the cavity as a means to provide a designed resident time for the desired treatment of the chemical species;
- and
- having a multitude of opening along the breadth of the cavity on each of the parallel sides of the length of the cavity that allows the applied electromagnetic energy to enter the cavity.
A heat transfer process where the gases and particulate are heated by heat exchanged from the source of the applied energy prior to entering a device which uses applied electromagnetic energy to react gases for a product or to treat pollutant to produce clean air.
A macroscopic artificial dielectric structure for a gas-permeable susceptor consisting:
- regions in the structure that are primarily reflective to applied electromagnetic energy where the reflections of the applied electromagnetic energy by these said regions provides a means for scattering the applied electromagnetic energy in the gas-permeable susceptor to interact with the other regions of the susceptor's structure which are not primarily reflective the applied electromagnetic energy;
- and
- and the distance between the said primarily reflective regions does not prevent the applied electromagnetic energy a) penetrating the macroscopic dielectric structure and b) interacting volumetrically with the susceptor and gases and/or particulates passing through the gas permeable susceptor.
A design for unit susceptors:
- having a matrix materials that surround a 2nd phase that is made from a material that is different from he matrix
A method of locally concentrating applied electromagnetic energy by using field concentrator on the unit susceptor.
A method of producing ozone from interaction between the field concentrators and the applied electromagnetic energy by:
- controlling the distance between field concentrators;
- and
- using a low loss, low dielectric constant material of construction for the unit susceptor.
