Abstract
A method to dynamically clamp the feedback control voltage in DC-DC converters, with the purpose to limit the duty-cycle and to protect the magnetic components against saturation, over a wide range of input voltage conditions. The clamping level is function of input voltage and allows the design optimization of the magnetic components in the way of minimizing their size and is active only during transient events, when momentary open loop condition may occur.
Claims19
A protection circuit described as “first preferred embodiment” and referred to FIG. 4, with the purpose to limit the volt-second product applied to a DC-DC converter magnetic components, by clamping the feedback control voltage to a safe limit function of input voltage in order to avoid saturation of said magnetic components, during DC-DC converter transient events, such as start-up and sudden load and input voltage changes, when open feedback loop conditions may occur.
A protection circuit described as “second preferred embodiment” and referred to FIG. 5, with the purpose to limit the volt-second product applied to a DC-DC converter magnetic components, by clamping the feedback control voltage to a safe limit function of input voltage in order to avoid saturation of said magnetic components, during DC-DC converter transient events, such as start-up and sudden load and input voltage changes, when open feedback loop conditions may occur.
A protection circuit described as “third preferred embodiment” and referred to FIG. 9, with the purpose to limit the volt-second product applied to a DC-DC converter magnetic components, by clamping the feedback control voltage to a safe limit function of input voltage in order to avoid saturation of said magnetic components, during DC-DC converter transient events, such as start-up and sudden load and input voltage changes, when open feedback loop conditions may occur.
A protection circuit described as “fourth preferred embodiment” and referred to FIG. 10, with the purpose to limit the volt-second product applied to a DC-DC converter magnetic components, by clamping the feedback control voltage to a safe limit function of input voltage in order to avoid saturation of said magnetic components, during DC-DC converter transient events, such as start-up and sudden load and input voltage changes, when open feedback loop conditions may occur.
