Abstract
A method for re-selecting control channels in a mobile station reduces the use of resources by limiting an evaluation of candidate control channels to those channels which satisfy certain criteria and are deemed to be eligible control channels. As a consequence, resources are not spent on attempting to re-select a control channel that is not compatible with the mobile station.
Claims19
In a system in which a mobile station operating on a first control channel can re-select another control channel, a method for controlling a re-selection process comprising the steps of:
- (a) receiving a list of candidate control channels;
- (b) determining if any of said candidate control channels are ineligible for re-selection;
- (c) analyzing candidate control channels in said list to identify a primary-candidate control channel where the step of analyzing is performed only with respect to those candidate control channels not determined to be ineligible;
- (d) attempting to re-select said primary candidate control channel.
In a process of controlling a mobile station's re-selection of a control channel, a method for modifying a list of candidate control channels, the method comprising the steps of:
- analyzing the list of candidate control channels to determine if any of the control channels are incompatible with the mobile station;
- and
- marking as ineligible those candidate control channels determined to be incompatible;
- wherein once a candidate control channel is marked ineligible it is ignored by the re-selection process.
In a wireless communication environment in which a mobile station camps on to a selected control channel and can select an alternative control channel on which to attempt to camp, a method comprising the steps of:
- receiving a list of candidate control channels at the mobile station over the control channel on which the mobile station is currently camped;
- analyzing said list to determine a primary candidate channel for re-selection;
- attempting to re-select said primary candidate channel;
- if the attempt to re-select fails because the primary candidate channel corresponds to a private system to which the mobile station is not permitted access, then marking the primary candidate channel as ineligible for re-selection such that during a subsequent attempt to re-select the control channel marked as ineligible is not considered.
In a mobile station camped onto a first control channel and capable of re-selecting an alternative control channel, a method of identifying a potential alternative control channel comprising the steps of:
- receiving a list of candidate control channels, said list including an identifier for each candidate control channel and at least one parameter defining information regarding its associated candidate control channel;
- determining, for each candidate control channel, whether it is eligible for re-selection based upon information defined by said at least one parameter associated with that control channel;
- selecting a primary candidate control channel from those candidate control channels determined to be eligible;
- and
- wherein the primary candidate control channel constitutes the potential alternative control channel for a subsequent re-selection attempt.
In a process of controlling a mobile station's re-selection of a control channel, a method for modifying a list of candidate control channels comprising the steps of:
- determining whether an attempted re-select to one of the candidate control channels failed due to incompatibility of the mobile station and the one candidate control channel;
- and
- if incompatibility is determined, marking said one candidate control channel in said list of candidate control channels as ineligible;
- wherein once a candidate control channel is marked ineligible it is ignored by the re-selection process for a period.
