Abstract
We present a method and apparatus for increasing the depth of a lookup table. The lookup table includes at least two lookup units. A search request for a final result value corresponding to the key is issued to each of the lookup units in parallel. Each of the lookup units performs a multi-level search in parallel for the final result value. The final result value stored in only one of the lookup units is provided by one of the lookup units.

A lookup table comprising:
- a first lookup unit which receives a key and provides a first result through a multi-level search in the first lookup unit;
- and
- a second lookup unit which receives the key and provides a second result through a multi-level search in the second lookup unit, both the first lookup unit and the second lookup unit receiving the key in parallel and only one of the units providing a final result for the key stored in only one of the lookup units dependent on the first result and the second result.
A method for providing a final result for a key comprising the steps of:
- receiving the key in parallel by a first lookup unit and a second lookup unit;
- performing a multi-level search by the first lookup unit, resulting in a first result;
- performing a multi-level search by the second lookup unit, resulting in a second result;
- and
- providing the final result for the key by one of the units dependent on the first result and the second result.
