The invention provides compositions and methods that are useful for treating colic in mammals (e.g. human infants).

A composition comprising an aqueous emulsion of fennel oil.
A composition comprising 1) milk or infant formula and 2) fennel oil.
Fennel oil having a reduced estragole concentration of less than 2%.
A therapeutic method for treating colic in a mammal comprising administering to a mammal in need of such therapy an effective amount of fennel oil.
