A forward equalizer subjects a received signal to equalization in a forward direction with respect to time base, and outputs a signal representative of the equalization result. A backward equalizer subjects the received signal to equalization in a backward direction with respect to time base, and outputs a signal representative of the equalization result. An equalizer-less detector subjects the received signal to detection, and outputs a signal representative of the detection result. A determination is made as to whether or not both the signals outputted from the forward equalizer and the backward equalizer reside in a selection reference range. When both the signals outputted from the forward equalizer and the backward equalizer do not reside in the selection reference range, a final decision-result symbol is determined on the basis of the signals outputted from the forward equalizer, the backward equalizer, and the equalizer-less detector.
