Abstract
An arrangement in passenger vehicles, that diverts the impact energy in impacts away from the passengers to the remaining mass of the vehicle thereby protecting the passengers, and in the same arrangement provides utilitarian access to the vehicle, such utilitarian access making it possible to both install multi-element contoured surround seats for passengers and the driver, and also a safety device for head-on collision protection that obviates the need for conventional seat belts and front impact airbags. An indo-skeletal structural arrangement proposed for the vehicle, provides further benefits by targeting the strength of the vehicle to protect passengers while minimizing other massive elements in the vehicle.
Claims11
(I) A vehicle structure that selectively diverts the energy of impact away from a safe passenger environment within said vehicle, to the remaining mass of the vehicle thereby protecting passengers.
(I) A vehicle structure comprising a support arrangement for one or both of the front and rear of the passenger environment, and each of said support arrangements comprising:
- f) one or more central body tubes with a first end and one or more attachment surfaces, attached by said attachment surfaces to said passenger environment thereby providing it support;
- g) a body extender tube with a first end and a second end, each of said body extender tubes being connected by its first end to the first end of one of said central body tubes;
- h) an end connector tube that is slidably connected to one of said body extender tubes, said connection having motion control elements to slide in and out of corresponding said body extender tube, and said end connector tube being connected with the end section of the vehicle comprising wheels and bumper arrangements;
- i) a module that has a first end and a second end, that is oriented with its first end near the passenger environment and its second end near said end section, and pivotally mounted near its second end about a horizontal and lateral axis on the one or more end connector tubes such that said module may pivot upwards about said axis;
- j) one or more cranks with a first end and a second end, each attached with its first end to the module near the second end of said module, and each attached by its second end to a body extender tube, such that in the event of the end connector tube sliding into the corresponding body extender tube, said crank will force the module to pivot upwards;
- thereby under normal operating conditions, providing a means to retract one or both of the front and rear end sections by sliding said end connector tubes into the corresponding body extender tubes using said control devices, and thereby forcing the corresponding modules to pivot upwards with the force applied by the corresponding cranks, resulting in a shorter wheel base for one or more of greater maneuverability and curb visibility particularly while parking.
(I) A method in a vehicle to provide impact shock absorbion for passengers in front or rear impacts comprising:
- partially converting the kinetic energy of the linear motion of the impacting body into rotational kinetic energy of elements of said vehicle excluding the passenger environment;
- partially converting said kinetic energy of impacting body into heat energy in compressing large shock absorbers that may compress without any obstruction, by a significant fraction of the length of the vehicle.
(I) A method in a vehicle to reduce the wheel base of said vehicle by folding elements of the vehicle excluding the passenger environment without changing the spacial orientation of the passenger environment or the wheels of said vehicle.
(I) In a vehicle with an exoskeletal structure, a front impact protection means comprising one or more airbags deployed in the areas surrounding the engine in the engine compartment.
(I) In a vehicle with an exoskeletal structure, a front impact protection means comprising one or more airbags deployed between the engine compartment and a passenger compartment that is normally rigidly attached to other components of the vehicle but detaches on impact on compression of said airbags and thereafter is slidably attached to the remaining parts of the vehicle in a predetermined controlled fashion.
