Abstract
A power driver includes a motor and a spindle having a distal end thereof opposite the motor. The distal end has an axial bore formed therein. A gear assembly is disposed operatively between the motor and the spindle so that the motor rotationally drives the spindle through the gear assembly. A grip is mounted in the spindle in communication with the axial bore. A driver is mounted about the spindle in operative communication with the grip so that activation of the driver in a closing direction moves the grip radially toward the axis and activation of the driver in an opening direction moves the grip radially away from the axis.
Claims39
A power driver, said driver comprising:
- a driver housing;
- a motor disposed in said housing;
- a spindle having a distal end thereof opposite said motor, said distal end having an axial bore formed therein;
- a gear assembly mounted on said spindle operatively between said motor and said spindle, and secured with respect to said spindle independently of said driver housing, so that said motor rotationally drives said spindle through said gear assembly;
- a grip mounted in said spindle in communication with said axial bore;
- and
- a driver mounted about said spindle in operative communication with said grip so that activation of said driver in a closing direction moves said grip radially toward the axis of said bore and activation of said driver in an opening direction moves said grip radially away from said axis.
A power driver, said driver comprising:
- a housing;
- a motor disposed in said housing;
- a spindle having a distal end thereof opposite said motor, said distal end having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed in said distal end intersecting said axial bore;
- a plurality of jaws, a separate one of said jaws being slidably positioned in one of each of said passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face formed on one side thereof;
- and
- a nut axially movably disposed about said spindle distal end in driving engagement with said jaws so that axial movement of said nut with respect to said spindle moves said jaws in said passageways.
A chuck, said chuck comprising:
- a generally cylindrical body having an axial bore formed therein and a plurality of angularly disposed passageways formed in said body intersecting said axial bore;
- a plurality of jaws, a separate one of said jaws being slidably positioned in one of each of said passageways, each of said jaws having a jaw face formed on one side thereof;
- a nut axially movably disposed about said body in driving engagement with said jaws so that axial movement of said nut with respect to said body moves said jaws in said passageways;
- a jaw guide mounted axially reciprocally with respect to said body and in operative communication with said nut so that said nut transfers rearward axial force to said jaw guide;
- and
- a spring disposed between said jaw guide and said body so that said spring exerts an axial compression force therebetween.
A power driver, said driver comprising:
- a housing;
- a motor disposed in said housing;
- a spindle having a distal end thereof opposite said motor, said distal end having an axial bore formed therein;
- a grip mounted in said spindle in communication with said axial bore;
- a driver mounted about said spindle in operative communication with said grip so that activation of said driver in a closing direction moves said grip radially toward the axis of said bore and activation of said driver in an opening direction moves said grip radially away from said axis;
- and
- a lock between said spindle and said housing, said lock being configured to rotationally hold said spindle with respect to said housing against rotational force applied to said distal end.
A geared tool holder for use in a power driver having a motor, said tool holder comprising:
- a generally cylindrical body having a nose section and a tail section, said nose section having an axial bore formed therein, and said bore being configured to receive a tool therein;
- a plurality of jaws axially reciprocally disposed in said body in communication with said bore;
- and
- a series of gears having an input configured to receive rotational output from said motor, wherein said gears are mounted in communication with said body, and secured with respect to said body independently of the power driver, so that said gears translate rotational drive to said body.
A geared tool holder for use in a power driver having a motor, said tool holder comprising:
- a drive shaft that defines generally cylindrical chuck body having a nose section and a tail section, said nose section having an axial bore formed therein, and said bore being configured to receive a tool therein;
- a plurality of jaws axially reciprocally disposed in said body in communication with said bore;
- a series of gears having an input configured to directly receive rotational output from said motor, wherein said gears are mounted in communication with said drive shaft, and secured with respect to said drive shaft independently of the power driver, so that said gears translate rotational drive to said drive shaft, and wherein said gears define at least two different selectable gear ratios between said motor and said drive shaft;
- and
- a gear housing separate from the driver and enclosing said gears,
- wherein said series of gears defines at least two planetary gear paths between said input and said drive shaft and includes a reciprocal gear movable between a first position in which said reciprocal gear completes a first said planetary gear path and a second position in which said reciprocal gear completes a second said planetary gear path.
A geared tool holder for use in a power driver having a motor and a driver housing defining an opening at a forward end thereof and a keyway that communicates with said opening, said tool holder comprising:
- a drive shaft;
- a generally cylindrical chuck body having a nose section and a tail section, said tail section being configured to rotate with a drive shaft, said nose section having an axial bore formed therein, and said bore being configured to receive a tool therein;
- a plurality of jaws axially reciprocally disposed in said body in communication with said bore;
- a series of gears having an input configured to receive rotational output from said motor, wherein said gears are mounted in communication with said drive shaft, and secured with respect to said drive shaft independently of the power driver, so that said gears translate rotational drive to said drive shaft;
- and
- a gear housing separate from the driver, said gear housing being configured to be received by the driver housing opening and defining a key that is shaped to mate with the keyway when said gear housing is received by the driver housing so that said key axially secures said gear housing to the driver housing.
A method of assembling a power driver, said method comprising the steps of:
- providing a power driver having a motor and a driver housing;
- providing a geared tool holder that includes
- a drive shaft,
- a generally cylindrical chuck body having a nose section and a tail section, said tail section being configured to rotate with a drive shaft, said nose section having an axial bore formed therein, and said bore being configured to receive a tool therein,
- a plurality of jaws axially reciprocally disposed in said body in communication with said bore, and
- a series of gears having an input configured to directly receive rotational output from said motor, wherein said gears are mounted in communication with said drive shaft, and secured with respect to said drive shaft independently of the power driver, so that said gears translate rotational drive to said drive shaft, wherein said gears define at least two different selectable gear ratios between said motor and said drive shaft;
- and
- attaching said tool holder to said power driver.
