Abstract

An improved, multi-function, comfort wheelchair is disclosed, comprised of an otherwise conventional wheelchair. With interchangeable padded seats. The leg members and associated braces of the wheelchair are adjustable in conjunction with the back member to allow the user to position himself or herself in the reclined position. Reclining of the leg members and back member is achieved via an electric motor. A control means facilitates control of the electric motor, and is located on one of the armrests. A bedpan is positioned on a rail underneath the hole in the metal unit, in a waste storage chamber. The bedpan can be emptied through a door in the front of the containment. The metal unit contains a chamber sealing means, that when activated by the control on the armrest the waste storage chamber is airtight. A filtration means is used to control odor from the use of the bedpan. This commode and leg containment slide out on rails so the wheelchair can fold up by means of a telescoping main axle. Adjustable hand rails are for people of varying heights. The headrest expands the entire width of the chair and can move backward out of the way, it can also detach or stay secure. A detachable or secure backpack or carrying means and detachable or secure multiple size cup hold are also incorporated. This multi-function, comfort wheelchair provides the comfort of padded seats, easy access to commode use without ambulating the patient to the bathroom, a chamber sealing and filtration means to lock out bad odor from the containment unit, reclining of the back and leg members for long term comfort, movability of the wheelchair to other areas, the ability to fold the wheelchair together for transport. With the rising number of people who are 50 and older the demand for a wheelchair like this is global in nature.

Dependent claims

In an otherwise conventional wheelchair having wheels and a frame and supporting a back support and a seat having armrests, the improvement comprising:

a pair of independently articulating leg supports, each pivotally affixed to the wheelchair frame at a pivot hinge;
an actuator linkage for bracing each leg member in a rotationally articulated manner about said pivot hinge such as to allow each leg support member to be adjustable between an upright and reclined position, wherein said actuator linkage comprises a drive shaft in electrical communication with a control means in physical contact with said armrest for controlling said articulating leg supports.

An improved, multi-function, comfort wheel chair, comprising:

An otherwise conventional wheelchair, either motorized or of manual operation, said wheelchair equipped with arm rest, a seat back, seat, and wheels similar in appearance and function to those on a conventional wheelchair;
a pair of leg members, said members bing adjustable and designed to aid in reclining of the user;
a back member, said back member being adjustable and designed to allow the user to position himself or herself in the reclined position;
an electric motor, said electric motor used to reclining said leg members and back member;
an electric attachment, said electric attachment from 55b leg motor that also connects to arm rest, this disconnects when pulling center assembly out from the side rails on this chair;
a control means, said control means designed to facilitate control of said electric motor, with said control means located on one of said armrests of said wheelchair;
a padded seat, said padded seat releasable from snaps from said wheelchair by pulling hand opening on seats up and containing a hole in it to facilitate sanitary urination and excretion of bodily fluids through said hole in said padded seat;
a metal unit, said metal unit supporting said padded seat, with said metal unit having a metal unit hole of similar shape and location as said hole on said padded seat;
a telescoping main axis, said telescoping main axis is collapsible to fold up, with said wheelchair;
a weight, said weight is to counter balance the backward movement of said wheelchair back;
a privacy shield, said privacy shield positioned along the exterior later;
rails, said rails on both sides of assembly housing so it can slide in and out of housing;
an assembly housing, said assembly housing unit containing commode, leg elevation, filtration means, and sealing system to make commode generally airtight and posterior perimeter of said wheelchair, and designed to provide a visual barrier to provide privacy to the individual while using said present invention;
a waste storage chamber, said waste storage located underneath said padded seat metal unit designed to hold said bedpan on said rail securely, directly under said metal hole unit;
a chamber hatch, said chamber hatch permitting access to said bedpan in said storage chamber;
a chamber sealing means, said chamber sealing means used to seal said chamber after use, where in said chamber sealing means is a slidable metal sheet that covers said metal unit hold when activated by said drive shaft;
and said connector to leg motor and said chamber sealing means to seal said containment;
a filtration means, said filtration means designed to control odor from said waste storage chamber.
