## Abstract

A video encoder for encoding a video into a data stream using motion compensated prediction for inter predicted blocks, comprising a hypothesis number control, configured to control a number of prediction hypotheses of the inter predicted blocks within a predetermined portion of the video to meet a predetermined criterion.

## Claims

### Claim 1

Video encoder (10) for supporting multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction, configured to
use, for n-th hypotheses of inter prediction block, a motion vector accuracy which depends on n.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

Video encoder (10) according to claim 1, configured so that the dependency is monotonic.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1, 2)

Video encoder (10) according to claim 1 or 2, configured so that the larger n is, the coarser the motion vector accuracy is.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1, 2)

Video encoder (10) according to claims 1 or 2, configured to insert into the data stream (14) motion vector information for inter-predicted blocks (80) at the motion vector accuracy.

### Claim 5

Video decoder (20) for supporting multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction, configured to
use, for n-th hypotheses of inter prediction block (80), a motion vector accuracy which depend on n.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

Video decoder (20) according to claim 5, configured so that the dependency is monotonic.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5, 6)

Video decoder (20) according to claim 5 or 6, configured so that the larger n is, the coarser the motion vector prediction is.

### Claim 8 (depends on 5, 6)

Video decoder (20) according to claims 5 or 6, configured to insert into the data stream (14) motion vector information for inter-predicted blocks at the motion vector accuracy.

### Claim 9

Method for encoding for supporting multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction, comprising
using, for n-th hypotheses of inter prediction block, a motion vector accuracy which depends on n.

### Claim 10

Method for decoding for supporting multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction, comprising
using, for n-th hypotheses of inter prediction block (80), a motion vector accuracy which depend on n.

### Claim 11

A non-transitory digital storage medium having a computer program stored thereon to perform the method for encoding for supporting multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction, comprising
using, for n-th hypotheses of inter prediction block, a motion vector accuracy which depends on n.

### Claim 12

A non-transitory digital storage medium having a computer program stored thereon to perform the method for decoding for supporting multi-hypothesis motion compensated prediction, comprising
