Abstract
A method and apparatus for using Euclidean modulation in an antenna are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method for controlling an antenna comprises mapping a desired modulation to achievable modulation states, mapping modulation values associated with the achievable modulation states to one or more control parameters, and controlling radio frequency (RF) radiating antenna elements using the one or more control parameters to perform beam forming.

A method for controlling an antenna having a metasurface with a plurality of radio-frequency (RF) radiating metamaterial antenna elements, the method comprising:
- selecting spatial modulations for the plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements using Euclidean modulation, including mapping desired spatial modulations to achievable spatial modulation states;
- and
- controlling the plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements based on modulation values associated with the achievable spatial modulation states to perform beam forming, including tuning the plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements based on the Euclidean modulation to produce arbitrary radiation patterns.
An antenna comprising:
- a substrate with a metasurface having a plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements;
- and
- a controller coupled to the substrate and having modulation logic to:
- select spatial modulations for the plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements using Euclidean modulation, wherein selection of spatial modulations includes mapping desired modulations to achievable modulation states, and
- control the plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements based on modulation values associated with the achievable modulation states to perform beam forming, where control of the plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements including tuning the plurality of RF radiating metamaterial antenna elements based on the Euclidean modulation to produce arbitrary radiation patterns.
