## Abstract

An electrolyte composition for an anode-free metal battery cell, wherein the metal is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal, or a metal of Group IIIa of the periodic table, including a first solvent, a salt of the alkali metal, the alkaline earth metal or the metal of Group IIIa of the periodic table, the salt being soluble in the first solvent, and an additive. The concentration of the salt in the electrolyte is between 2 M and 3 M, and the additive is a perfluorinated organic compound including at least one halogen atom. The halogen is chlorine, bromine or iodine. An anode-free metal battery cell can include the electrolyte composition.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An electrolyte composition for an anode-free metal battery cell, comprising:
a first solvent, selected from the group consisting of alkyl esters of carbonates, ethers, nitriles, sulfones, sulfoxides, esters and ionic liquids;
optionally, a second solvent selected from the group consisting of a hydrofluoroether, a partially fluorinated alkyl ether and a combination thereof:
a salt of an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a metal of Group IIIa of the periodic table, wherein the salt is soluble in the first solvent, and
a perfluorinated organic compound of Formula I
wherein
X is Cl, Br or I,
Y is Cl, Br or I,
x is between 0 and 10, and
y is between 1 and 3,
wherein
the concentration of the salt in the electrolyte is between 2 M and 3 M,
the metal of the anode-free metal battery cell is an alkali metal, an alkaline earth metal or a metal of Group IIIa of the periodic table, and
when the second solvent is present, the % by weight of the second solvent is from 2% by weight to 30% by weight of the electrolyte composition.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte composition according to claim 1, wherein
the metal is lithium (Li) or magnesium (Mg),
the salt is a lithium salt or magnesium salt, respectively, and

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte composition according to claim 1, wherein X and Y are each I.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The electrolyte composition according to claim 3, wherein the perfluorinated organic compound is selected from the group consisting of 1,4-diiodoperfluorobutane, 1,6-diiodoperfluorohexane, and 1,8-diiodoperfluorooctane.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte composition according to claim 1, comprising between 0.01 and 20% by weight of the perfluorinated organic compound of Formula I, based on the total weight of the electrolyte.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The electrolyte composition according to claim 1, wherein the first solvent is an ionic liquid and wherein the ionic liquid comprises a cation and an anion, wherein
