Updating avatar clothing for a user of a messaging system

A system comprising:

• at least one processor;
• at least one memory component storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:
• receiving, by a messaging application running on a device of a user, a request to identify at least one object depicted in an image captured by a device camera;
• determining, in response to receiving the request, that an attribute of an object depicted in the image relates to clothing;
• activating, in response to determining that the attribute relates to clothing, a first augmented reality content item from among plural available augmented reality content items for applying to the image, the first augmented reality content item being configured to update an avatar of the user;
• selecting, in response to activating the first augmented reality content item, a plurality of articles of clothing from among plural candidate articles of clothing for the avatar of the user, each of the plurality of articles of clothing being associated with the attribute of the object,
• wherein selecting the plurality of articles of clothing comprises calculating respective relevancy scores for the plurality of articles of clothing based on a number of confirmed matches between the attribute of the object and attributes stored in association with the plural candidate articles of clothing, and limiting a number of the plurality of articles of clothing based on the respective relevancy scores;
• and
• displaying the plurality of selected articles of clothing in ranked order based on the respective relevancy scores with the avatar of the user.

A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform operations comprising:

• receiving, by a messaging application running on a device of a user, a request to identify at least one object depicted in an image captured by a device camera;
• determining, in response to receiving the request, that an attribute of an object depicted in the image relates to clothing;
• activating, in response to determining that the attribute relates to clothing, a first augmented reality content item from among plural available augmented reality content items for applying to the image, the first augmented reality content item being configured to update an avatar of the user;
• selecting, in response to activating the first augmented reality content item, a plurality of articles of clothing from among plural candidate articles of clothing for the avatar of the user, each of the plurality of articles of clothing being associated with the attribute of the object,
• wherein selecting the plurality of articles of clothing comprises calculating respective relevancy scores for the plurality of articles of clothing based on a number of confirmed matches between the attribute of the object and attributes stored in association with the plural candidate articles of clothing, and limiting a number of the plurality of articles of clothing based on the respective relevancy scores;
• and
• displaying the plurality of selected articles of clothing in ranked order based on the respective relevancy scores with the avatar of the user.
