Toroidal segmentation of repeating patterns in images

A system comprising:

• a memory component;
• and
• a processing device coupled to the memory component, the processing device to perform operations comprising:
• segmenting an input image including a repeating pattern to identify input image regions of a minimal cell of the repeating pattern;
• representing each input image region using a node of a graph and defining an edge between each pair of nodes that represents adjoining image regions;
• identifying, using the graph, portions of toroidally connected image regions and portions of mergeable adjoining image regions of the minimal cell of the repeating pattern;
• joining each portion of each mergeable adjoining image region and unwrapping each portion of each toroidally connected image region to produce a plurality of resultant image regions for the minimal cell;
• and
• rendering or storing each of the resultant image regions as a graphical object of the repeating pattern.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing executable instructions, which when executed by a processing device, cause the processing device to perform operations comprising:

• generating a graph for a repeating pattern in an image, the graph configured to identify portions of toroidally connected image regions and portions of mergeable adjoining image regions of a minimal cell of the repeating pattern;
• joining each portion of each mergeable adjoining image region and unwrapping each portion of each toroidally connected image region to produce a plurality of resultant image regions for the minimal cell;
• and
• rendering or storing vector graphical representations of the resultant image regions from the repeating pattern.
